Sindelfingen

More than "Daimler-City"

Location:

Near to the car, air and railway hub of Stuttgart and in the reach of the northern Black Forest - there is the city which combines tradition and modernity with quality: Sindelfingen. The same distance away from Berlin, Paris, Florence and Vienna, lying in the middle of Europe, here you find a romantic old town with the 900 year old early Roman Martin Church and modern industry with DaimlerChrysler and numerous middle sized companies. The many years of tradition with weaving is continued through the modern textile wholesale center in Sindelfingen Ost.

History & economy:

The roots of the modern city of Sindelfingen can be traced back to the early Stone Age. The first, if even quite sparse evidence of human settlement comes from this time. The image is clearer in the post-Christian time when between the first and third century a Roman settlement existed underneath the Goldberg. After the Romans were driven away, the Alemanni settled in Sindelfingen. In 1263, Count Rudolf von Tübingen founded Sindelfingen in a symmetrical direction to the St. Martin's Church south of the monastery of canons. For the financial and personnel endowment of their newly founded university, Count Eberhard and his mother Mechthild moved the monastery to Tübingen in 1477, which was a bitter loss for Sindelfingen. Women from Sindelfingen suffered much in the 16th and 17th centuries due to the witch hunts. The city also carried the consequences of the Thirty Years' War for a long time. It took until the 19th century before Sindelfingen began to grow out of the medieval city core. In the meantime, the city had become a center for hand weaving in Wuerttemberg. The industrialization followed in 1915 suddenly with the settlement of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. Within a few decades, Sindelfingen became a modern industrial location. In 1962 it became a main district city, in 1971 the incorporation of Darmsheim and Maichingen followed.

Museums & Galleries:

Weaving museum Sindelfingen
In the former weaving school of the city built in 1900, the Sindelfingen Weaving Museum has been set up in December 2000. As an emphasis the history of hand weaving is shown. Sindelfingen took an important position in the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg with hand weaving in the 19th century.
Much space is dedicated to the social situation of the weavers who were characterized by the typical double carrier structure of agriculture and weaving. Through emmigration, many weavers looked for an escape from an oppressive situation. It becomes clear how the Sinderfingen weavers found a niche through specializing in the valuable Jacquard weaving, which competed into the 20th century with the superior machine weaving. In the Schiller Foyer, there is a historic loom from the year 1750 which is on loan from the company Zweigert & Savitzki.
An overview of the late industrialization of Sindelfingen and the fate of the last home weavers completes the historical tour. The museum offer is supplemented by the weaving courses of the interest group for hand weaving which still take place in the house, meaning that the visitors find a living museum in which historical information and practiced handcraft supplement each other in an ideal form.

Corbeil-Essonnes-Platz 4, with a continuous exhibition of hand woven textiles. Tour possible.

House for the History of the IBM data processing
In a time when the computer has become a matter of course in everyday life, in which data processing is further developing quicker than ever, a view of the history of computer technology is worth it. The members of the group "history" of the IBM club show, in the former punch hole card printing shop in Sindelfingen, the most important milestones - from Hollerith's "Electric Tabulating System" up to mega chip large processors.
The focal point of the collection (some 500 m²) is the development and production of the company in Germany. Above all worth seeing is the Hollerith department with an original hole puncher (from 1890) and Hollerith's electrical counting and sorting system with filling station and sorting box (reconstruction) which formed the basis of the punch hole card process.
For several decades calculation was conducted electro-mechanically, from the end of the 1940s electronically, then the age of the electron tubes began, thousands of them were packed into machines. After the invention of the transistor, the energy-consuming tube calculators were replaced by transistor machines, the IBM 1401 brought the breakthrough (as of 1958).
Transistors in modules followed, finally highly developed chip technology. The miniaturization in data processing could no longer be stopped. The individual stages of the development are shown in an impressive manner in the collection.
A special attraction: the machines which have been restored by former IBM technicians and brought back to working condition can also be seen in "action".

City Museum Sindelfingen
In the old City Hall form 1478 and in the bordering Salt House in the heart of the historic Old Town the Sindelfingen City Museum has been found since 1958.
Resulting from a humble beginning, the museum offers the visitors a city history and folklore oriented tour with approximately 450 m². It spans from the prehistoric times to the 19th century.
One can track down the Romans, who settled here earlier, and the Alemanni with the help of archeological findings as well as the living circumstances in medieval Sindelfingen.
Special attention should be given to the wooden paneled farmer's room from the 19th century and the detailed city model showing Sindelfingen in the year 1830.
The 3rd floor is dedicated to differing handicraft professions, whereas agriculture and weaving take up much space due to their historical importance.
On the 4th floor, historical toys are presented on around 90 m² - doll houses, play shops and a complete fair enchant young and old.
