Villa Merkel (Municipal Art Gallery)
The Villa Merkel was built in the Neo-Renaissance style and regularly exhibits contemporary art. In addition, every three years the internationally acclaimed Photo Triennial takes place here. The prestigious villa has a portico flanked by columns which leads into a two-storey atrium. The light interior is spanned by a glass roof, which was extremely modern at that time. Since 1973 the former living area of the factory owner Merkel and his family has been used as exhibition space for the Municipal Art Gallery. The surroundings of the villa have changed greatly since then. Originally the factory buildings of the Merkel Wool Spinning Mill directly adjoined the garden. The trade name “Esslinger Wolle” is a reminder of the heyday of the company. Today the Villa Merkel is surrounded by a municipal park.
