Over 100 horse skeletons were discovered during archaeological excavations in 2024/25 near the former Roman fort on the Hallschlag. Archaeologist Sarah Roth from the Baden-Württemberg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments reports on the initial findings of this remarkable discovery.

In the 2nd century AD, these horses were used by the Roman army as riding or pack animals. Remarkably, these animals were not eaten or used, but were probably buried in individual graves over a longer period of time. The large number of mostly excellently preserved skeletons gives scientists an insight into the horse population of an equestrian unit in the Roman north-western provinces for the first time, including origin, breed, size, sex, age and causes of death.
