Historical Festival 2018
(Show more dates)
The Stuttgart Beer Festival was held for the first time in 1818. It was originally founded as the "Landwirtschaftliches Fest zu Kannstadt" – an agricultural show aimed at strengthening and reforming the region's farming industry, which had been severely affected by the eruption of the volcano Tambora in Indonesia. Today the festival has long since become a traditional event with international appeal. With the Historical Festival on Palace Square in 2018, Stuttgart is celebrating a double jubilee: 200 years of the Stuttgart Beer Festival, and the 100th Agricultural Show. From 26th September to 3rd October, in the heart of Baden-Württemberg's state capital, people will commemorate the festival's initiation by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and his consort, Queen Katharina.
The two tree-lined avenues on either side of Palace Square will be transformed into fairground promenades in the style of the 19th and 20th centuries. Entertainment will be provided by historical showmen such as jugglers, artists and quack doctors, as well as illusionists' booths and a flea circus.
And in the festival marquee jubilee beer will be served, specially brewed for the occasion by Dinkelacker and Hofbräu, two of Stuttgart's breweries. The Agricultural Show will be commemorated with typical species of livestock and an exhibition of the most memorable items from Baden-Württemberg's agricultural past.
In addition to the Historical Festival on Palace Square, the Stuttgart Beer Festival and the Agricultural Show will, of course, also take place as usual in 2018 on the Cannstatter Wasen fairground. Festivities will last for 17 days, from 28th September to 14th October.
