System and order, chance and chaos represent two sides of the same coin. The die stands for both: its cubic form signals clear-cut quantity and repetition but also unpredictability and play. Dice and coincidence play an important role in art. The special exhibition »[un]expected: The Art of Chance« reveals the significance of fortuity as an artistic force in art from 1920 to the present. Engaging chance in the making of art indicates a delight in the creative interaction between defined elements, materials, and found objects. In his frottage and collage works Max Ernst picked up on the aesthetic potential of chance. Exponents of Concrete Art, such as François Morellet or Manfred Mohr, broke through the systematic approach of their art by integrating chance using the computer. The exhibition will offer an extensive program for children and adolescents on the theme of »Art and Mathematics.«
