Ofenschlupfer (swabian bread pudding)

Best when enjoyed warm: The Ofenschlupfer (sweet bread pudding) is an enjoyable dessert with a long tradition. The sweet Swabian treat melts on your tongue. Especially scrumptious with warm vanilla sauce!

Recipe for Ofenschlupfer (bread pudding)

Ingredients (for 4 servings):

  • 70 g of butter
  • 6 stale milk rolls
  • 6 large apples
  • Cinnamon
  • 50 g raisons
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 l milk
  • 3 Tbs. of sugar with a little vanilla flavoring (1/2 tbs.)

Grease an oven dish well with 20 g of butter. Cut the rolls into slices. Peel apples and remove seeds with an apple core remover. Cut apples into slices.

Place one layer of bread slices on the bottom of the oven dish, follow with one layer of apples, add a little cinnamon and raisons and distribute evenly, repeat until all the ingredients are used up. Mix eggs with milk, vanilla and sugar and pour over ingredients.

Bake the bread pudding for one hour at 200 to 225 degrees Celsius (gas, level 3-4) on the lower oven rack until the surface is a golden brown. The Ofenschlupfer is served warm, topped with hot vanilla sauce. Leftovers may also be served cold with ice cream.
