Stuttgart is rich in fountains that characterize the cityscape and have both historical and artistic significance. These fountains are often artistically designed and serve not only as ornaments, but also as meeting points and places of recreation for the city's residents and visitors. Many of the fountains tell stories from the past or are associated with myths and legends. The care and maintenance of these fountains is supported by various organizations and foundations, which ensure that they remain in good condition and that their cultural significance is preserved.

Mineral water wells are supplied by artesian mineral springs or mineral-rich groundwater. Artesian conditions exist when the groundwater pressure surface is higher than the ground surface. The water then emerges from a borehole without the aid of pumps. The Bäderbetriebe Stuttgart is responsible for maintaining the mineral springs. The mineral waters are classified as lightly or highly mineralized waters and medicinal waters.

Drinking f ountains are connected to the public water network or are supplied by a mineral water spring. From 2020, drinking fountains will be labeled with a "drinking water" sign.

Water features are fountain systems in which the fountain water is circulated by a circulation pump via a water storage chamber. This water, called process water, is not suitable for drinking.
