St. Leonhardskirche Stuttgart

St. Leonhard's Church is the second oldest church in Stuttgart. It originated from a chapel that was dedicated to St. Leonhard, the emergency helper for horses, in 1339. The Gothic hall church was built in 1463-66 by Aberlin Jörg, who was also the master builder of the nave of the collegiate church and the hospital church. The church was a preaching church until 1806 - no weddings or baptisms were allowed. However, the sermon is an important part of the service, especially in the Protestant religion, and so many preachers liked to preach here - somewhat out of the way - because it was easier to speak openly than in the collegiate church, where members of the court or civil servants might listen.

Famous Stuttgart residents were buried here, first and foremost Johannes Reuchlin, humanist and legal advisor to the dukes of Württemberg (1455-1522). His gravestone, carved in three languages, can be seen in the choir.
