Stuttgart 21 is transforming the heart of the state capital. The historic terminus station is being converted into a modern underground through station with extraordinary architecture. At the same time, new rail lines are being built and the foundation is being laid for new urban neighborhoods in the heart of Stuttgart.
The current main station was built between 1914 and 1927 according to plans by Paul Bonatz and Friedrich Scholer. With its 56-meter-high station tower and the Mercedes star visible from afar, it is one of the city’s landmarks. The Bonatz building, a designated historic landmark, will be preserved and become part of the new station.
Anyone who wants to experience Stuttgart 21 up close can visit the InfoTurmStuttgart (ITS). The interactive exhibition provides information about the rail project and the city’s future development. The ITS rooftop terrace also offers a unique view of the construction site for the new main station.
Stuttgart 21 is transforming the city even beyond the station: on the track areas being freed up, Stuttgart Rosenstein will eventually emerge as a new urban district featuring apartments, jobs, green spaces, and public areas.
According to current plans (2026), the new main station is scheduled to open in December 2031. The entire project will be phased in gradually through 2033.
