The myth-enshrouded Malian city of Timbuktu is taken over by jihadists who want to impose their rules on the population. The Bedouin family of Kidane live peacefully in their tent until a quarrel with the fisherman Amabou upsets everything.
The perpetrators in the film come from all over and speak no common language. As little as they understand each other, they have no idea what the rules are that they impose on the people of Timbuktu.
The film competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival.
