Reading and discussion with Belinda Cannone, moderated by Tobias Scheffel
In her new stories "On a Thin Rope", Belinda Cannone uses the art of language to bring those pushed to the margins of society, the fugitives, the invisible and the unheard back into the light of our attention, such as twenty-year-old Céleste, who lives with her mother in a remote valley in a "solidarity community" and leaves her home to go into hiding in the forest.
to go into hiding in the forest. Or like the three siblings abandoned by their parents, who discover their strength through their magical connection to nature. In these enchantingly lightly told stories, which delve deep into the abysses of our time, all the way back to Nazi-occupied France or the Yugoslav wars and the "European external borders", each story captures an entire world in which vulnerability carries these vulnérables across the abyss on a thin rope. Belinda Cannone was born in Tunisia to Sicilian-Corsican parents and now lives in Paris and Normandy. Her work has been awarded the Essay Prize of the Académie Française
among others. Tobias Scheffel and Claudia Steinitz have translated the stories into German.
