Queer Perspectives in the Permanent Collection

The Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart’s Old Palace invites visitors to discover cultural history from new perspectives. “More Than One Reality” brings queer stories to light and offers fresh perspectives on familiar historical objects and narratives.
The focus is on the “Legendary Masterpieces” permanent collection, featuring artistic installations, newly curated historical sources, and alternative perspectives on the state’s history. These interventions demonstrate that many historical collections have long been shaped by traditional and heteronormative viewpoints, while queer realities of life were scarcely represented. As a result, familiar objects appear in a new light. Figures such as Charles Woodcock, the longtime lover and close confidant of King Charles of Württemberg, are also brought to light in a new way.
“More Than One Reality” stands for an open, diverse museum and invites visitors to rediscover history.
