Here, everyone steals the solo from everyone else:
A violin concerto becomes a flute concerto, a harpsichord concerto becomes a violin concerto, and a violin concerto becomes a harpsichord concerto. It is not until the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto that the harpsichord, transverse flute, and violin return to their familiar solo roles. Some of the arrangements are by Bach himself.
The practice of transposition and arrangement was commonplace in the Baroque era: instruments were swapped out and musical ideas were translated into new timbres. This program offers a preview of our Nuovi talenti competition, in which young ensembles are invited to arrange Bach’s works in the same spirit.
