Festival for urban listening

To mark the tenth anniversary of the "Stuttgarter Kollektiv für aktuelle Musik" (S-K-A-M e.V.), the "Biotope of Sound" festival will take place on July 12 and 13, 2025. Marienplatz and neighboring locations in the south of Stuttgart will be transformed into a multi-layered acoustic ecosystem - with concerts, performances, installations and interactive formats. The festival sees itself as an open laboratory for experimental soundscapes in public spaces. In 18 projects of new and experimental music and an accompanying exhibition, Stuttgart artists and international guests address current issues relating to the coexistence of people and nature in an urban context. Contemporary music permeates urban spaces, helps to shape them and opens up new perspectives in the city's resonance space.

In the multimedia Echo Chambers, social filter bubbles are reflected artistically, while Ecotones merges sound, light and electronics into a poetic street opera. The installation strange kinships brings pigeons - often overlooked city dwellers - into the focus of acoustic observation. In Words / No Words, philosopher Christian Grüny opens up an improvised sound-text discourse, while DeFoRM explores the boundary between art and protest. Mobile formats such as Flora and Fauna or Hemerobie roam the habitat as sounding interventions. The SKAMobil, a musical bicycle performance, connects places and draws attention to the festival in a sonorous way. Children and young people actively shape the Music Memory. The collective video project Listening Portraits - SKAM Edition documents individual listening perceptions. The Low End Biotope is putting down sound roots in the square, while the Pony Says Goth Club demonstrates: New music can also be club culture.

The festival space extends to neighboring venues: In Tanzmeer, the performance Liquid Flow meets Cri de Cœur, a concert between silence and screams. At Café Galao, questions of identity are negotiated at Imagination. Atelier Liststraße opens its doors to the WolkenZimmerKlavier, while at Gasthaus Lehen, everyday language can be experienced musically via a loop station.
