by Johann Strauss and Ralph Benatzky Revue operetta in seven pictures by Rudolph Schanzer and Ernst Welisch In a version by the Stuttgart State Opera with a text by Judith Schalansky in German with surtitles in German and English
"The music emanating from the pit has show and entertainment qualities", wrote the Badische Zeitung on the occasion of the premiere in December 2024. And the stage and costumes also emanate and embellish, albeit not entirely unbroken - with a slightly ironic opulence, so to speak. Casanova is the title of the revue operetta, which was premiered in 1928 by "revue king" Erik Charell at the Großes Schauspielhaus Berlin with music by Johann Strauss and Ralph Benatzky. Casanova is less the title hero. Instead, Barberina takes over the show in two guises and leads us through an evening that is about much more than "just" Casanova: it is also about female desire, about playing with identities, with images of masculinity, femininity and the in-between.
