Peter Munk, a poor charcoal-burner's son from the Black Forest, longs for wealth. A good spirit, the little glass man, grants him two of his three wishes. Instead of heart and mind, Peter wishes for a glassworks and always as much money in his pocket as the fat Ezekiel. It comes as it had to: the coal-munk Peter crashes, loses his money and is beaten up and expelled. In his distress, he seeks out the Dutchman Michel. He promises him eternal wealth if he is prepared to swap his human heart for a heart of stone. He agrees to the deal and loses his feelings. Although he lives in luxury, he rejects his mother and beats his wife when she, against his wishes, gives alms to a beggar. The beggar, however, turns out to be the Glass Man and Peter seizes the opportunity to make his third wish, which he still has free...
