Reading and discussion with Lutz Seiler, moderated by Katharina Borchardt
It begins with a small, unhealed wound caused by a kiss, and takes us halfway around the globe. In his new novel, *Das tickende Herz* (*The Ticking Heart*), Lutz Seiler continues the story of his protagonist’s life, in which world history and personal fate intersect. At the start of the new millennium, Carl Bischoff returns to Berlin from the Brandenburg countryside—only to set out again soon after. His pilgrimage follows that of a Kazakh shaman’s daughter—who appeared as if out of nowhere and seems to know almost everything about him. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Curonian Spit, and the winter-cold steppes of Kazakhstan are the stops along the path of their fairy-tale-like, magical, yet dubious love. Lutz Seiler is a freelance writer and has headed the literary program at the Peter-Huchel-Haus near Potsdam since 1997. In 2023, he received the Georg Büchner Prize.
