In her debut novel, Vernesa Berbo tells the haunting story of two sisters during the siege of Sarajevo. Dijana is a sister, daughter and soldier. When asked why she is called "son", her father only smiles mysteriously. Dijana is self-confident and passionate, but above all she is the protector of Dada, her sister who is two years younger. Sensitive and bright, Dada was born in 1976 in the freezing cold, like a snowflake that floats into the room at the last moment before the window is slammed shut. When the siege of Sarajevo began in 1992, Dijana realized that it was up to her to get her sister, the "snowflake", through the war alive. While Dijana faces the war with harshness, Dada clings to Mirza, her first great love - until fatal events threaten to take everything away from the sisters. War and love against all odds have rarely been written about so tenderly, yet uncompromisingly and full of narrative power.
