Deutschland und Afghanistan: Eine gescheiterte Intervention

Reflections on a failed intervention

The lecture takes a critical look at Germany's twenty-year involvement in the international mission in Afghanistan. The focus is on the political, civilian and military objectives, as well as the failure of the mission with the rapid loss of power to the Taliban in 2021. Particular attention will be paid to the review of the intervention in Germany, for example by the Bundestag Committee of Inquiry and a Commission of Inquiry since 2022. The lecture sheds light on the background, responsibility and lessons learned from the intervention and asks for perspectives for an honest assessment of German foreign and security policy.
