Die Baklava-Republik / The Republic of Baklava
- Location:
- Theater tri-bühne, Eberhardstraße 61A, 70173 Stuttgart
A performance in Greek with German translation assistance.
Starting from this seemingly absurd question, *The Republic of Baklava* explores how identities emerge, how national myths are constructed, and how people seek a sense of belonging.
Through the symbolic power of one of the best-known and most controversial culinary products of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, the production questions what actually defines a community: history, memory, culture, or imagination.
A Greek woman and a Turkish man decide to found their own country: a new republic based on their shared love of baklava. Their private space becomes the headquarters of this imaginary state, while a group of “researchers” attempts to reconstruct its history, conflicts, and identity.
Blurring the lines between fiction and documentary theater, the production traces the emergence of this fictional country and, with humor, irony, and imagination, explores real-world questions about nationalism, cultural heritage, and coexistence.
