The history of the Hospitalhof Stuttgart could not be more eventful: Dominican monastery - hospital and old people's home - police headquarters, from 1961 meeting place, administrative center and educational center of the Protestant parish of Stuttgart.
The exhibition focuses in particular on the period from 1895, when a floor with detention cells was added to the transverse wing for the new purpose. The Stuttgart criminal investigation department was housed here until 1945, where Sinti and Roma, Jews, homosexuals, politically and religiously persecuted people and forced laborers were imprisoned, interrogated, humiliated and tortured. The name "Büchsenschmiere" ("can grease") comes from this time.
