In the mid-1960s, a radiation was discovered - completely by chance and unexpectedly - that is often referred to as the "echo of the Big Bang". Experts prefer the name "cosmic background radiation".
This discovery was absolutely crucial and groundbreaking for today's cosmology. It was the most brilliant confirmation of the theory of the origin of the cosmos through a "big bang". At the same time, it also decisively underpinned the claim that a previously unknown type of matter, "dark matter", should really exist in our world.
