“Ein Kabinettschrank für den König”

The StadtPalais presents a new highlight: an ornate leather cabinet from the estate of King Wilhelm II, made possible by the Kulturstiftung der Länder and the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.

For the first time, the StadtPalais has been offered a very high-quality and elaborately crafted piece of furniture. With the generous support of two foundations, the "Kulturstiftung der Länder" and the "Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung", a leather cabinet from the estate of King Wilhelm II was acquired. Dr. Edith Neumann, head of the collection and deputy director of the StadtPalais, and the entire team are delighted with the financial and non-material support that has made this unique new acquisition for the StadtPalais collection possible.
The two-part piece of furniture consists of a box with handles that is splendidly decorated all around with embossed leather and metal fittings: A so-called traveling writing case, which stands on a high frame turned from wood and stained. The special feature of this cabinet is its oriental-Moorish design, which is reminiscent of a Spanish vargueño from the 17th century. However, the cabinet was made in Stuttgart in the 1880s and testifies to the very high level of the art industry in Württemberg at the time. King Karl initially owned this cabinet, who passed it on to his nephew Wilhelm at the very time when he decided to refurnish the Wilhelmspalais as his future residence.
