After an introduction by Prof. Cornelis Witthoefft on the history and characteristics of Rainer Maria Rilke's reception in song, the students offer a representative cross-section of a fascinating, rarely heard repertoire, which includes compositions of Rilke's German poems as well as settings of his poems in French and in English translations and Rilke translations from English. The program includes compositions by Samuel Barber, Alban Berg, Leonard Bernstein, Ernst Krenek, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Viktor Ullmann, among others.
