A Christmas Story
A stage fairy tale with music based on Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens' timelessly topical "Christmas Carol" from 1843 is one of the most famous Christmas tales in literature. The socially critical tale about the old miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is haunted by four ghosts on the eve of Christmas and rediscovers his humanity through them, is a classic. This story, first published in 1843, seems timeless and topical. Especially in an age of self-centeredness, with egocentrism and iPhones, Charles Dickens' work emphasizes the value of charity and empathetic interaction with one another.
Director Martin Mühleis, who has celebrated great success with stage adaptations of literary works in recent years, has created a musical stage fairy tale from this story together with composer Libor Síma. Its aesthetic is reminiscent of old black and white films and plays with elements of literary revues. The music and the clever lighting design create spaces - and yet the literary text always plays the main role; the tempo, rhythm and structure of the novella are preserved even in the reading version.
In December, it will be staged in an original version with music and an unusual cast to boot. Depending on the city, the evening will either feature the cult duo Miroslav Nemec and Udo Wachtveitl or the two actors Samuel Finzi and Herbert Knaup. Musically, the actors are accompanied by a string quintet. Together, the interplay with the stage music succeeds in bringing out the typical, quirky British humor in a touching way.
A wonderful Advent evening that gets the audience in the mood for the approaching Christmas festivities.
