The state capital of Stuttgart invites all interested parties to the inauguration of a new memorial stele on the Birkenkopf.
"What's next for the Birkenkopf?" - we have been asking ourselves this question together with interested Stuttgart residents since the first discussion in the fall of 2023. Since then, there has been a lively exchange and joint walks on "Monte Scherbelino". One thing became clear: the Birkenkopf is an important place for Stuttgart, for leisure and for remembrance. What has been missing so far, however, is detailed information about its history for citizens and visitors.
This is now changing, as we are inviting all interested parties to the inauguration of the new memorial stele on May 8, 2026 from 4 pm - a date that marks the end of the Second World War and is directly linked to Stuttgart's Birkenkopf. As a so-called mountain of rubble, it was created after the end of the war from around one and a half million cubic meters of rubble from the destroyed city. Remains of facades, pieces of columns and other fragments are still visible between the stones, making the history and destruction directly tangible. With the new stele, the history of the Birkenkopf, from finds from the Mesolithic period to the present day, will be permanently explained on site for the first time.
The inauguration will be accompanied by speeches and musical contributions. The First Mayor Dr. Fabian Mayer will be joined by District Head Bernhard Mellert, Pastor Astrid Riehle and architect and urban planner Giuliana Fronte. Following the unveiling, participants are invited to join a tour entitled "Layers & Shards" to the summit.
The meeting point is directly at the new stele at the bottom of the footpath between the parking lot and the summit. No registration required.
