Lecture and ARTE film screening with Irmela von der Lühe
Erika Mann made headlines as an actress and author, as a racing car driver, cabaret artist and lecturer, and finally even as a war reporter. Thomas Mann called his daughter his "bold, wonderful child". She fascinated with her ingenuity, her courage and her eloquence. From 1933 onwards, her work was devoted to the satirical and journalistic fight against Hitler, and after her exile she was primarily concerned with her brother's and father's work and estate. Irmela von der Lühe, literary scholar and professor at the FU Berlin for many years, is one of the most important experts on Erika Mann and presents her to us in particular with her political cabaret contributions.

The Magic Mountain - Thomas Mann's novel of the century
Introduction: Irmela von der Lühe
The ARTE documentary shows the overwhelming landscape on which Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain" was written. Using archive images and spectacular, newly shot footage, it immerses us in the world of the Magic Mountain to take us on a literary mountain tour of this great novel. Published in 1924, Thomas Mann worked on "The Magic Mountain" for several years. In the meantime, the world changed: the German Empire became the Weimar Republic, the planned contemporary novel became a historical novel about a bygone era - a decaying Europe in the closed room of a Davos lung sanatorium.
ARTE / SRF 2024, 53 minutes, a film by André Schäfer and Tabea Sperl
An event cooperation between Hospitalhof / Evangelisches Bildungszentrum, Literaturhaus Stuttgart and the network of literature houses
