The term smart city has a vague definition. It can mean anything from a highly technological surveillance apparatus to citizens' initiatives. Examples from Germany and abroad show which goals have already been achieved in model projects and which tasks still lie ahead of us.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Iris Belle, Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, explains in her lecture why the use of data in urban development and planning is innovative and how architects, engineers and urban planners can plan and build in a more climate-friendly way thanks to structured data. Examples from Germany and abroad will show which goals have already been achieved in model projects and which tasks still lie ahead.
