For Lent, it doesn't always have to be a Passion setting by Bach - there are countless other Baroque works that focus on the suffering of Christ. These include Telemann, who wrote over 1,700 cantatas. His cantata collection "Geistliches Singen und Spielen", composed in Eisenach around 1710, comprises 72 works. The texts are mainly by Erdmann Neumeister, who attributed theological significance to music both in church services and for personal devotion.
The cantatas are therefore extremely varied - from large-scale festive music to introverted chamber music. For this program, Lionel Meunier, musical director of Vox Luminis, has chosen a varied selection from Telemann's collection as well as Bach's Missa brevis in G major BWV 236.
