Talk and audience discussion with Marko Martin and Matthias Bormuth
Journalist Marko Martin is known for his political attacks. The Berlin speech he gave to the Federal President in 2024 to mark the anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution was described by DIE ZEIT as a "great moment for democracy". His latest book "Freiheitsaufgaben" (Tasks of Freedom) takes a critical look at the shift to the right in the East and the despondency in the West and sees German democracy at a crossroads. With Manès Sperber and André Glucksmann, he asks: Are we facing up to the tasks of freedom or are we giving up our freedom? He talks about this with Matthias Bormuth, an expert on the anti-totalitarian debate that Hannah Arendt posed in conjunction with New York intellectuals such as Melvin Lasky in Elements and Origins of Totalitarianism. After a short discussion between the two, the audience is cordially invited to join in the discussion on current challenges in political life based on their historical reflections. In addition to a volume of essays on Israeli literature and a tribute to Tel Aviv, his books "Schlafende Hunde" and "Die Nacht von San Salvador" were published by the Andere Bibliothek, as well as the volume of essays "Dissidentisches Denken" in 2019. With "Das Haus in Habana. Ein Rapport", he was shortlisted for the Leipzig Book Fair Essay Prize.
