On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart e. V. is organizing a symposium on the topic of "Language(s) and Power" at the Jugendhaus Degerloch. Visitors can expect lectures, workshops, a panel discussion and space for networking.
Multilingualism is part of everyday life for many people and is part of our social reality. Nevertheless, languages are valued differently in our society: While some languages are seen as an educational and professional advantage, other languages are often associated with deficits. These different evaluations have an impact on educational opportunities, social participation and belonging.
The symposium "Language(s) and Power" will address the question of how these language hierarchies arise, how they work and what needs to change in society so that multilingualism is more strongly recognized as a resource. The symposium combines academic perspectives with practical experience from associations, families and educational work and creates space for exchange, discussion and networking.
