Gustav Mesmer - Ein Flugradbauer und sein Leben.

Location:
Theaterhaus, Siemensstr. 11, 70469 Stuttgart

A man of the last century, he still speaks to us because his life and work are so eloquent, even though 'Der Ikarus vom Lautertal' was locked away in psychiatric institutions for 35 years. Gustav Mesmer's wealth of ideas makes a lasting impression: his flying machines, texts, musical instruments, talking machines and his paintings. He was a tireless creator until his old age. He was a quiet man who had to be patient with his life. And yet he was not bitter, sometimes annoyed, demanding, occasionally angry at his fate and hopelessness, but never powerless. He took pleasure in his own work, had a need to communicate in his texts and a dream of flying.

His inventions received international acclaim. One of his flying bicycles was exhibited in the German Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Seville in 1992. When asked if he wanted to come to the opening of the exhibition, he said: 'If I can be there again at the end of the exhibition'. For him, 'Dahoim' was his birthplace Altshausen and the country home Buttenhausen in the Swabian Alb, where he spent the last 30 years of his life. During these years, Gustav Messmer created an extraordinary body of work, which is now being performed on stage in the form of plays as well as texts, images and objects.
