Reading and discussion with Thomas Melle Moderator: Lotta Mayer
In his new novel "Haus zur Sonne", Thomas Melle also deals with his bipolar disorder, a kind of sequel to his successful novel "Die Welt im Rücken". The protagonist - Thomas Melle - takes a radical
and unsparing look at his life and decides to end it. To do so, he admits himself to a suicide clinic called "Haus zur Sonne". There, the patients are initially to have all their earthly and supernatural longings and heart's desires fulfilled so that they can then depart from life. Thomas Melle plays with fiction and truth here along the distinction between tiredness of life and death wish, dreams and happiness. If life is determined by others, can dying be self-determined and liberating? Haus zur Sonne was shortlisted for the German Book Prize 2025. Shortly after its publication in August 2025, the stage version of its predecessor "Die Welt im Rücken", directed by Lucia Bihler, celebrated its premiere at Schauspiel Stuttgart.
Following the reading, there is the opportunity to attend the performance Die Welt im Rücken at the Schauspiel; start: 8.30 pm.
