A chamber opera by Béla Bartók about closeness, darkness and knowledge
Béla Bartók's only operatic work defies clear categories: Is it a relationship drama, a psychological chamber play or a musical parable? In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, the interior of a castle becomes a symbol of the human soul - and the setting for an existential dialog about closeness, trust and the inexplicable between two people.
Judith wants to open all the doors in Bluebeard's innermost being - out of love, out of hope, out of the desire for truth. But with every door opened, it becomes clearer: knowledge has its price.
Our performance presents this masterpiece in an intimate chamber music version, close to Bartók's original sound conception at the piano. Every word, every note becomes a tangible gesture - direct, concentrated and frighteningly topical.
With: Diána Hajdú (soprano) in the role of Judit, Péter Cser as Duke Bluebeard and István Dénes at the piano
