Revue operetta in 12 pictures by Robert Stolz and Robert Gilbert A production of the Isny Opera Festival at the Wilhelma Theater
An idolized film director from Berlin wants to shoot a music film in the Swiss mountains and stays at the hotel "Zum Wilden Mann". Here he falls in love with the hotel owner's enchanting secretary. She is not averse to the idea, flirts back fiercely and sees herself as a budding film star in Berlin. However, not only the director has succumbed to her charms, but also the hotel manager's three sons and - with serious marriage intentions - the hotel manager himself.
The work premiered under the name "Grüezi" on November 3, 1934 at the Stadttheater Zürich. Robert Stolz's music mixes elements of the jazzy pop music of the 1930s with Viennese marching songs, waltzes and traditional Swiss songs.
Robert Stolz, born in Graz in 1880, was initially Kapellmeister at the Theater an der Wien. At the beginning of the 1920s, he tried to set up his own theater in Vienna. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he secretly brought several Jews and politically persecuted people to Austria on 21 trips, hiding them in the back of his large limousine. After Austria's "Anschluss" to Germany, he left his homeland due to his opposition to National Socialism. He came to New York via Zurich and Paris. During his emigration, he was also nominated for a film music Oscar. In his long life, Robert Stolz composed over 60 operettas as well as numerous film scores and songs that have become popular today. After the Second World War, he was regarded as the last great master of Viennese operetta.
Since 1989, the Isny Opera Festival - sponsored in accordance with the festival guidelines of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science and the Arts - has given talented students and young graduates from various music academies the opportunity to develop and try out opera roles and shape them into a fine ensemble sound.
