Opening Next Frontiers - Applied Fiction Days | Moderation: Frederike Wiechmann | AI can already perform tasks that were long considered exclusively human. In the journal Nature, four scientists therefore put forward the thesis that machines have already achieved human intelligence. But what does that actually mean? Our idea of intelligence is closely linked to what we understand by humanity and has always been culturally narrated and negotiated. What machine intelligence is or can be therefore depends not only on technical capabilities, but above all on how people use it, shape it and talk about it. This is precisely where culture comes in: It creates images of thinking machines and, in passing, tells us about what makes us human. Science fiction thus becomes a mirror of our hopes and fears and an experimental space for future realities.
