The age of the Investiture Controversy began with King Henry IV's adventurous crossing of the Alps in January 1077, which led him to the gates of Canossa Castle in northern Italy. There, Pope Gregory VII had sought protection from the approaching king from the Margravine Matilda of Tuscia. Henry IV embarked on the arduous and extremely perilous journey in order to obtain a release from the papal ban in Canossa and thus save his reign. So much for the history.
With "Zwei Füße für ein Halleluja - Mit einem Regenten unterwegs", Jochen Malmsheimer and his musical partner Uwe Rössler present a witty and entertaining introduction to the subject of Canossa.
Essential questions of the Canossa walk are explored:
How far can you go?
And above all: why go to Italy, and then on foot?
What do you actually wear when you meet the Pope?
What are the real reasons for the gross nonsense of calling a variation-less droning and honking "medieval music"?
And above all: what makes the job of king so appealing when both the Saxons and the Pope make your life hell?
Jochen Malmsheimer breathes new life into the Salian emperor and Uwe Rössler underpins the highly entertaining excursion into the everyday life and mentality of the Middle Ages with original sounds and inspires with a brilliant ride through music history from Bach to Brahms. Because nothing is as it was - Deo gratias et in excelsis jubilo.
