Even after serving five years in prison for embezzling funds, John Gabriel Borkman shows no signs of remorse. On the contrary, although he has lost everything, he still harbors fantasies of omnipotence. Withdrawn to the second floor of the villa, he dreams of building a commodities empire. His wife Gunhild is deeply offended by the disgrace that the ruin has brought to the family. She pins all her hopes on their son Erhart.
