Where the dead speak
Jaroslav Rudiš
Moderation: Andreas Platthaus
Jaroslav Rudiš's new novel "Where the Dead Speak" is being published to coincide with the Czech Republic's appearance as guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Lorenzo, Caspar and Miss Detroit: three friends - all somewhere between midlife and tired of life - set off on a journey through the heart of Central Europe. Not by train, as we are used to from Rudiš, but in an old Saab. In the trunk: the bones of a Nazi criminal, which they have stolen from a Berlin cemetery to get ahead of looting Reich citizens. What begins as an absurd mission turns into a road trip through cemeteries and into the past. While Lorenzo tries to write a poem about the dead European poets in the back seat, Miss Detroit dreams of becoming a cemetery botanist. And Caspar remembers his great-uncle, who died tragically as a child in the war and has haunted the family history ever since. With every kilometer they drive, the three grow closer together and long for an answer to the question that grows louder with every grave: What do the dead talk about when you listen to them?

Kafka Band plays Kafka
In November 2013, the Kafka Band made its first appearance at the Literaturhaus Stuttgart with a program based on Franz Kafka's novel fragment "The Castle". This was followed by numerous concerts in German-speaking countries and other European countries, two theater productions in Bremen, various video clips and, also in collaboration with the Literaturhaus Stuttgart, two further albums on Franz Kafka's "Amerika" and "Der Process".
Now the band, led by writer Jaroslav Rudiš and musician and comic artist Jaromír 99, is once again on tour. The Kafka Band also features some of the most renowned Czech musicians, including members of the bands Priessnitz, Umakart, Letní kapela and Tata Bojs, all of whom enjoy cult status in the Czech Republic: Dušan Neuwerth, Tomáš Neuwerth, Zdeněk Jurčík, Lukáš Morávek and Petr Weiser. 13 years after their first appearance, the musicians will play a selection from all their previous programs in Stuttgart. Join us for a long, rocking and dark Kafka party.
