Sofia Gubaidulina (1931-2025) dedicated her 40-minute Canticle of the Sun (1997) to the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, whom she saw as "illuminated by the sun", on his 70th birthday. She set Franz von Assisi's poem to music as a glorification of the Creator and creation, from the attitude of a humble monk. The restrained and mysterious choral part corresponds to this. In contrast, the cello and percussion parts are extroverted and expressive. The highly motivated singers of the Frankfurt University Chamber Choir, who have been superbly prepared by Prof. Lohmann, will make this work, as well as the music of Lasso and Bach, shine for us.
