Karoline Höfler presents “The Music of Carla Bley“ • presented by IG Jazz

On May 11, 2026, the American composer, arranger and pianist Carla Bley would be 90 years old. Double bassist Karoline Höfler is taking this as an opportunity to pay tribute to arguably the most important jazz composer of the last century with a series of quartet concerts.

Carla Bley's compositions refuse the expected, they often surprise with quiet tones and subtle humor, yet they leave the players the necessary room for interpretation to be able to give the composition their own, unforeseen direction.
Four well-known and experienced musicians from the Baden Württemberg jazz scene, who also "grew up" with this music, have each thrown their very own personality into a common pot to bring some of Carla Bley's most beautiful compositions to new life, true to Carla's motto: "Chin up, play what you feel, the music must be authentic, then it's good."
