Reading and Discussion with Serhij Zhadan, Moderated by Evgenia Lopata

“The city lay there like an animal with a broken spine.” In the war-torn
metropolis, people gather in places that are still more or less intact: on the soccer field, in the church, in a light-filled high-rise office. In the new volume *No One Will Ask for Anything*, Zhadan’s readers encounter familiar characters from the books *Mesopotamia* and *Boarding School*: musicians, unemployed teachers, advertising executives, and auto mechanics. Now they are grappling with new realities: an elderly woman must be evacuated after an attack, a disabled man needs a job, and a fallen colleague is being buried. The collection of short stories was translated from Ukrainian by Sabine Stöhr and Juri Durkot. In addition, the new poetry collection “Hymns of the Baroque Wars” will be mentioned; it has just been published in Ukrainian but has not yet been translated into German. Serhij Zhadan is one of the most important contemporary authors on the international scene. In 2022, he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Zhadan lives in Kharkiv and has been a soldier since May 2024.
