Lecture by Ulla Katharina Groha M.A., art historian, museum educator

Carl Spitzweg, born in Munich in 1808, has enjoyed great popularity, especially in the recent past, for his punchline paintings, which have become very popular. In his small-format works full of subtle irony and wit, the trained pharmacist takes aim at the bourgeoisie with all its eccentricities and thus reveals the endearingly absurd behavior of people with their desires for a fulfilled existence. In his pictorial worlds, he takes us on a journey to small moments of happiness in everyday human life.
Spitzweg may have stood apart from the official events in Munich's visual arts at the time, but perhaps this is precisely why he was able to achieve surprising results. The lecture provides a far-reaching insight into the life and artistic work of this maverick.
