Walter Wilson Cobbett was an English industrialist and great lover of chamber music who, in 1911, established a composition prize in his name. The aim was to revive the old genre of one-movement instrumental fantasies, which originated around 1600. In 1932, the 18-year-old Benjamin Britten won the prize with his innovative Phantasy for oboe and strings. His lesser-known colleague Ernest John Moeran wrote his Fantasy Quartet in 1945. Théodor Dubois (1837-1924), who taught at the Paris Conservatoire for over 40 years from 1871, created his large piano quintet in 1905.
