At the end of the 18th century, serenades were often performed outdoors in Austria on all kinds of occasions. And because wind instruments sound best outdoors, Mozart always achieved great effect with his serenades for these instruments. He wrote to his father in 1781 that he had written the Serenade K. 375 "a little sensibly" (i.e. more artistically than usual) in order to convince a musical advisor to the Emperor.

A century later, the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) referred to this old tradition and created music for wind ensemble that was rich in sound and color, to which he added a cello and a double bass for reinforcement.
