Mozart's String Quintet in C minor is his own arrangement of the demanding "Nachtmusique" K. 388 for eight wind instruments. He composed it for an ensemble at the Viennese court, where Emperor Joseph II was a great lover of counterpoint. This extraordinary piece contains refined canons, which are also impressive in the quintet version.
In the summer of 1886, Johannes Brahms composed his second sonata for cello and piano for the famous cellist Robert Hausmann, with whom he performed the work in Vienna that same year. This collaboration provided an intimate understanding of the possibilities of the low string instrument.
The Hungarian composer Ernst (Ernö) von Dohnányi (1877-1960) was regarded as a musical prodigy. He studied in Budapest and made the acquaintance of Johannes Brahms in 1895, who praised his Opus 1, the Piano Quintet, effusively. No wonder - because in this work he stylistically follows in the footsteps of the older composer.
