Lake Street Dive
According to drummer Mike Calabrese, Lake Street Dive sound like an attempt to bring The Beatles and Motown to the same party. In fact, the band from the USA has expanded the possibilities of pop music many times over with its influences from soul, folk, jazz and pop and has long been known for its all-genre-embracing approach. This musical idea has not only been developed by the five-piece band, who are firmly connected by the bond of friendship, on their seven albums released to date. On stage too, Lake Street Dive have long since become an esteemed live band, building a strong bond with their audience since day one and already touring worldwide. With their seventh album "Good Together", the band celebrated a Grammy nomination in 2025 and expanded their diversity once again. In fall 2026, Lake Street Dive will return to Germany and play their biggest shows to date in Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart.
Lake Street Dive formed in 2004 after multi-instrumentalist Mike Olson, vocalist Rachael Price, bassist Bridget Kearny and drummer Mike Calabrese met at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Audibly influenced by their jazz studies, their debut album "In This Episode" was released in 2007 and revealed the band's sound for the first time. After the release of their album "Promises, Promises" (2008), the self-titled album "Lake Street Dive" laid the foundations for the band's sound and made them better known nationally. The EP "Fun Machine", released in 2012, allowed the band to break through on an international level with a sound between pop, jazz and neo-soul as well as the song "Rich Girl". This was followed by "Bad Family Portrait" with the jazzy hit track "Better Than". Lake Street Dive proved that the band had found their sound but were happy to continue developing it with their 2019 album "Obviously", on which, according to Rolling Stone, they once again refused to think small with lo-fi influenced pop and a lonely intimacy. 2024 was followed by 'Good Together', which sprang from a mindset that the band describes as "joyful rebellion", as drummer Mike Calabrese explains: "There's a lot to be angry about in this world right now - a lot of pain, anger and division, but it's not sustainable to constantly live in that resentment - you need something else to keep the ball rolling." Throughout the album, Lake Street Dive reveal the immense diversity of their musicality and expressive imagination. While "Better Not Tell You" brings with it a seventies funk influence and dance vibe, "Far Gone" drifts into spheres of psychedelic rock. The fact that the musical tastes of the five members were as far apart as never before at the time of the album's release turned out to be a great advantage, as Price explains. "We manage to bring all these influences together with genuine love and respect for the diversity within the band," which is not least anchored in the strong friendship between the individual members. "Everyone has a voice, everyone is heard, we are all very careful to ensure everyone's satisfaction."
