Alexandre Dumas' Le Comte de Monte Cristo is one of the most exciting and profound novels ever written. We follow the fate of Edmond Dantès, a young man who seems to have it all: worldly success as the young captain of a ship, romantic love with the beautiful Mercedes. But everything is taken away from him by a jealous lover, a greedy banker and a corrupt judge. Edmond is thrown into prison for fifteen long years. A dying prisoner tells him the secret of the hiding place of a great treasure, and Edmond organizes one of the most famous escape stories in literature. The wealth is on the island of Monte Cristo, of which Dantès becomes Count. He begins his terrible revenge... But as his furious revenge takes on ever greater proportions, what do we feel in the face of his cruelty? Is it an eye for an eye? Is Edmond Dantès a victim of his own obsession with revenge?
