We talk to the author and arborist of solidarity agriculture Florian Hurtig about his book published by Mandelbaum-Verlag in June 2025.
This book is about a 500-year war against peasants that began with the expulsion from the commons, the collectively used pastures and forests. This was followed by what was probably the largest mass uprising in Europe for a fairer social order - which entered the history books as the Peasants' War and is currently celebrating its 500th anniversary. Florian Hurtig analyzes this uprising, its suppression and the perpetuation of a war against the peasantry as a prerequisite for modern capitalism and describes a renewed attack on peasants: The expropriation of their relationship with nature.
Modern science rationalized this relationship, increasing the exploitability of nature and peasants many times over. Once again, the collectives are scattered apart: this time the cross-species collectives that have made up the peasantry for thousands of years - and whose negation we are literally falling ill with today. Farmers are once again taking to the barricades today. How can we integrate these protests into a 500-year history of wars against peasants and their resistance - and what positive outlooks can we dare to take?
