When Germans are looking for something special and exotic, they travel to distant lands. Yet all they’d have to do is look over the fence, turn just around the corner, and they’d make the most incredible discoveries. For right in the heart of Germany, you can find liquid gold, join in strange dances, or witness a coronation. It’s astonishing what a secret world comes to light when you approach Germans with such loving patience and friendly curiosity as Wladimir Kaminer does. And because he also has a special sense of humor, he observes just as many amusing things as he does astonishing ones. His stories about the secret lives of Germans open your eyes to completely unknown aspects of the country and its people.
“Many people spend a lot of money on long-distance travel; they want to experience something exotic, yet they miss the real adventure right on their own doorstep. To understand the world, you don’t have to search for its end, but rather the place where it begins.” Wladimir Kaminer
